This classic and contemporary music festival offers a particularly rich and eclectic program.
Created in 1979, the Quimper Semaines Musicales take place each year over the first three weeks of August. Medieval, baroque, classic or contemporary; beautiful works, both famous and unknown, are performed in celebration of the greatest composers. This festival offers a particularly rich and eclectic program with piano, harpsichord, organ, strings and wind instruments mingling with the most moving voices.
The concerts take place in venues with excellent acoustics, with charm and beauty adding to the emotion of the performance : The chapel of Notre Dame de Kerdévot and the church of St Guinal in Ergué-Gabéric, the Roman church of Notre Dame de Locmaria, Saint Corentin Cathedral and the Lannion Orangerie (Quimper). In addition to the concerts the Theatre de Cornouaille also hosts lectures and workshops on stringed instruments that are run by renowned professionals.
The festival organizes the “Plumes et Partition” (Quill and Score) competition for middle and high school students in the Breton region. Almost 500 original texts or stories, written by students, are submitted to a jury made up of teachers, writers, musicians and librarians. The winning entry is set to music by a renowned composer and forms the basis for two free concerts the following year, one in Quimper, the other in Rennes. A compilation of the twenty best texts is made available to schools, libraries, the public, etc...
The Quimper Musical Weeks are sponsored by the City of Quimper, the town of Ergué-Gabéric, the Departmental Council of Finistère, the Breton Regional council and the Academy of Rennes.
